Leipzig, July 3, 2008 – ipoque, provider of professional solutions for Internet traffic management and analysis, will shortly start to conduct a new Internet study and is still looking for participating network operators to broaden the scope of the analysis. As in the past two studies of 2006 and 2007, all traffic will be classified by application using ipoque's proven deep packet inspection engine. For the applications with the highest data volume such as peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, the analysis will also take into account the content being transferred.

Free Download of ipoque's
Internet Study 2007

ipoque's Internet Study 2007 has revealed unparalleled information about application usage and popular Internet content in five regions of the world. More than three petabytes of traffic representing over one million subscribers were analyzed. The results for the different regions varied considerably. P2P produced, on average, between 49 and 83 percent of all Internet traffic with nighttime peaks of over 95 percent. About 20 percent of P2P traffic was encrypted – a value expected to have increased significantly since. Skype was by far the most popular Internet telephony service – a result most likely to hold this year. The Internet Study 2007 will be available as a free download immediately from ipoque's homepage.

Options for Participation and Benefits

Most of the Internet service providers who participated last year will again take part in this large-scale study. For an even larger scope, ipoque is looking for additional network operators. All they will have to do is install a PRX Traffic Manager, ipoque's DPI bandwidth management system, either inline or passively using mirror or tap ports, in their networks.
Participants will get a significant discount on the purchase of all PRX Traffic Managers used for the study plus a complementary three-year bronze support package. A limited number of systems is available on loan for the duration of the measurements.

ipoque Introduces 10 Gigabit Ethernet DPI Solution in a Compact 2U Package

Leipzig, June 2, 2008 – ipoque, the leading European provider of DPI solutions for Internet traffic management and analysis, introduces the two new high-performance systems PRX-5G and PRX-1G. PRX-5G supports three Gigabit Ethernet links or one 10-Gigabit Ethernet link at a maximum throughput of 6 Gbit/s in a 2U system. The smaller 1U PRX-1G supports three Gigabit Ethernet links and a throughput of 3.4 Gbit/s. With their support for three network links, the new systems also enable the effective management of asymmetric network traffic.

Along with these models, a firmware update with many new features has been released. These include VLAN-based bandwidth management and detection support for popular tunnel and gaming protocols. The new tunnel protocol module enables management of network traffic inside tunnels that use for instance SSL, OpenVPN, IPsec or TOR. The gaming module supports popular online games such as Half-Life 2, Steam, World of Warcraft and Microsoft's Xbox.

Improving the performance while at the same time significantly extending the protocol support is made possible by parallelization of the internal packet processing. PRX-5G and PRX-1G use seven respectively three packet processing cores. PRX-5G is able to handle three fully loaded Gigabit Ethernet links or up to six gigabit per second on a 10-Gigabit Ethernet link – being the DPI market’s first system to offer this performance in a rack space-saving 2U chassis.

Following are a few specifications and performance data for the new systems:

PRX-5G
Network interfaces:

three Gigabit Ethernet copper links (10/100/1000Base-T) or

one Gigabit Ethernet copper link (10/100/1000Base-T) and
two Gigabit Ethernet fiber links (1000Base-SX/LX SFP) or

one 10-Gigabit Ethernet link (CX4 or XFP) and
one Gigabit Ethernet copper link (10/100/1000Base-T)

Performance:

6 Gbit/s throughput

750,000 packets per second

1 million subscribers

PRX-1G
Interface configuration:

three Gigabit Ethernet copper links (10/100/1000Base-T)

Performance:

3.4 Gbit/s throughput

550,000 packets per second

250,000 subscribers

About PRX Traffic Manager

PRX Traffic Manager is a comprehensive and cost-effective bandwidth management solution enabling network operators to monitor and control network traffic per application and per subscriber. PRX Traffic Manager detects applications with a combination of layer-7 deep packet inspection (DPI) and behavioral traffic analysis. All major protocols including peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P), instant messaging (IM), media streaming and Internet telephony (VoIP) are supported.
ipoque PRX Traffic Manager Excels at Independent EANTC Performance Test

Leipzig, March 27, 2008 - ipoque's PRX-5G Internet Traffic Manager excelled in an independent performance test of traffic management gear conducted by the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC). 28 equipment vendors had been invited and 5 of these – including ipoque – decided to participate in the test. The results are published at http://www.internetevolution.com/. Besides ipoque, only one other vendor agreed to the publication of the results.

The results prove that ipoque PRX-5G provides a near 100 percent detection accuracy at full gigabit network load making it the ideal choice bandwidth management solution for carriers and large ISPs. As noted in EANTC's summary report, “EANTC engineers configured a multi service, carrier grade test setup to challenge the product by a large number of parallel P2P sessions/protocols and legacy Internet services alike.” The tests were conducted using carrier-grade IP routers in conjunction with test equipment from Ixia and Shenick. In various scenarios found in today's real-world networks, the testers generated over 3 million parallel sessions at a data rate of 971 Mbit/s with a mix of P2P and legacy Internet applications. The Ixia and Shenick analysis systems were used to emulate 134,115 IP clients with individual TCP stacks plus 2,000 IP clients running latency-sensitive applications like IPTV and VoIP.

Even under this tremendous load, PRX-5G performed according to its specification. The EANTC test engineers summarize: “The results proved that large parallel session numbers and different sent protocols have very limited and reproducible impact on throughput performance and latency. All offered P2P protocols were successfully detected, which proved active detection operation.”

Emulating more hostile network environments, EANTC found that “the ipoque PRX-5G was able to detect obfuscated traffic”, “was able to detect and regulate encrypted peer-to-peer traffic” and “showed successful detection of peer-to-peer traffic even if traffic was split by an asymmetric routing path.”

Test Result Snapshot

Test Setup:

13 P2P client types including 10 P2P protocols: BitTorrent (Azureus & µTorrent), eDonkey (eMule & aMule), Gnutella (Limewire & Shareaza), FastTrack (KaZaa), FileTopia, iMesh (BearShare), WinMX, MP2P (Manolito), Soulseek, DirectConnect

37,800 parallel P2P sessions in total

A total of 2,405,900 parallel legacy Internet sessions (HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3)

971 Mbit/s of bidirectional traffic for 30 seconds

Test Results:

Close to 100% detection & regulation accuracy for all major P2P protocols

Close to 80% detection rate for asymmetric P2P traffic

PRX-5G was able to sustain even the highest presented load

Zero packet loss up to 922 Mbit/s

Unregulated TCP sessions did not encounter increased TCP retransmissions or significantly larger session loss

Detection capabilities are unaffected by the network load

Support for at least 3,150,000 parallel sessions

Transparent network integration with limited effects on throughput and latency

Average latency of 220µs

Other applications were not affected and the average latency of IP traffic did not change during traffic regulation

The test report summary is available here.

About ipoque

ipoque is the leading European provider of Internet traffic management solutions.
ipoque Launches Carrier-Grade PRX-10G Traffic Manager

Leipzig, February 20, 2008 – ipoque, provider of professional solutions for Internet traffic management and analysis, has launched the new carrier-grade PRX-10G Traffic Manager which scales up to 60 gigabits per second and is based on IBM BladeCenter® technology. Up to six fully loaded Gigabit Ethernet or 10-Gigabit Ethernet links can be managed in a single chassis, where up to twelve load-balancing blades share the traffic load. The built-in high availability with automatic hardware fail-over ensures uninterrupted network connectivity in case of a blade failure. With the optional NEBS (Network Equipment-Building System) compliance, the PRX-10G can be installed in provider networks which have particularly strict requirements on their infrastructures.

PRX-10G enables operators to monitor and control network traffic per application and per subscriber. It has been optimized to meet the performance requirements of the most demanding network environments. As the network load rises, packet processing blades can be added. A fully equipped system is capable of processing up to 60 gigabits per second and 4.2 million packets per second. Its internal design avoids packet queuing yielding latencies below 0.1 millisecond.

PRX-10G can manage 12 million active subscribers with over 240 million concurrent connections. In case of a blade failure, the remaining blades take over and the failed blade can be replaced with no network interruption. With optional hot-standby blades, the full system performance is maintained even during such an event. Most other system components are also redundant and hot-pluggable.

IBM BladeCenter® needs up to 35 percent less energy than other rack servers without sacrificing performance. The proven technology enables easy and efficient support. Parts can be replaced based on IBM’s worldwide support network. ipoque offers customization services to meet specific requirements not available in off-the-shelf products.

„This is a milestone for ipoque. Compared to our previous traffic managers, this is a giant leap in capacity and marks ipoque's definite entry in the large carrier market“, says Klaus Mochalski, CEO of ipoque.

PRX Traffic Manager:

PRX Traffic Manager is a comprehensive and cost-effective bandwidth management solution enabling operators to monitor and control network traffic per application and per subscriber. PRX Traffic Manager detects applications with a combination of layer-7 deep packet inspection (DPI) and behavioral traffic analysis. All major protocols including P2P file sharing, instant messaging, media streaming and Internet telephony are supported.
