New Solution for Putting P2P on a Leash
ipoque launches a line of hardware network filters for management of peer-to-peer traffic generated by filesharing applications. By focusing on P2P, the appliances achieve high performance and flexibility at a competitive price level.
Leipzig, September 05, 2005: Filesharing based on P2P networks reportedly generates more traffic in the Internet than all other applications combined. ipoque's filter technology features a powerful and reliable traffic classification engine based on application-layer signatures. This eliminates misclassifications, which are common with legacy port-based filtering solutions. Regular signature updates ensure the reliable detection of new P2P protocols. Traffic classified as P2P can be either completely blocked or shaped to a configurable maximum data rate. Each P2P protocol can be handled individually. The integrated statistics functions provide the network operator with concise information on overall network and P2P usage.
The appliances operate as transparent bridges for easy integration into existing network infrastructures. They are managed via a simple and easy-to-use Web interface. Supported data rates range from 50 Mbps (PRX-100e) up to 2 Gbps (PRX-1000). The PRX-1000 models feature an integrated hardware bypass for carrier-grade reliability. In case of a power, hardware, or software failure, the bypass short-circuits the bridge ports for uninterrupted connectivity.
Modular Extension
Additional plugin modules can be installed on the appliances. Currently available are filter modules for instant messengers (IM), voice over IP (VoIP) and Web URLs. A number of appliances have successfully been deployed at major German universities and European internet service providers. At these institutions, P2P traffic has been substantially decreased.
