OpenDPI LogoHonestly, I am surprised by the great response to OpenDPI. Two weeks after releasing version 1.0 we have counted 1000 downloads. This is much more than we expected for this very special piece of software.

Making the own intellectual property public is an interesting experience. Of course we had a long internal discussion about that irreversible step beforehand. What do we give away and what will we get back?  What will other people say about our software? But all responses showed that it was the right step.

Here is one example: There was a nice article on Ars Technica about OpenDPI. And even though I didn’t expect much approval or praise, I found some interesting postings while reading through the mostly skeptical comments. It seems some people really do take a closer look ? exactly what we intended to achieve with this publication.

So, what will be the next steps for OpenDPI?

Currently, we are restructuring the source code to make the build process smoother. Thanks to some volunteers, we will very soon publish a “live analysis tool” for instant link analysis and an iptables integration. The next big steps for the OpenDPI core will be the IPv6 integration and the support for asymmetric traffic.

It is fascinating to see how fast things can progress if people work together!
